What does France mean to you? Style and elegance of course, superb cuisine and a less hectic way of life certainly, but France is also a proud and passionate Republic with a truly cosmopolitan flavour, surrounded as it is by Andorra, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Monaco, Spain and Switzerland.

There are 22 regions in France, each with an astonishing array of fresh fruits such as apricots, peaches, strawberries, figs, nuts melons and a range of fine local produce, each with its own individual recipes and style of cooking, and each convinced (with some justification) that it is the culinary capital of France, and therefore the world. There is nothing more delicious than queuing at a local Boulangerie in the morning for a fresh baguette followed with a smooth hot chocolate, the simple pleasures really come into their own in France.

The climate in France varies by region. In the North the winters are cool with mild summers and experience a much higher rainfall than the South. Many regions have very cold winters and snow especially near the borders of the Alps. The South of France and the Mediterranean enjoy mild winters and very hot summers. France is surrounded by three seas; the English Channel the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, with each sea offering something very different, from the strong waters of the Atlantic ideal for surfing, to the Mediterranean and the English Channel ideal for bathing in its clear, calm blue seas.

Paris is the capital with a population of 10.5 million. The total population is 62 million, the currency is the euro and the local time is GMT + 1 hour. The main religion is Roman Catholic and the national language is French with regional dialects, although English is widely spoken.

Each region of France is oozing in culture. Fine historical buildings and museums blend with local attractions such as mountains and lakes, fine sandy beaches, rivers and lush valleys, National Parks and undoubtedly the best collection of vineyards in the world.
