At the very heart of the Mediterranean you'll find Italy. Separated from France, Switzerland and Austria by the Alps and surrounded by the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas, its scenic mountains, lakes and rich woodlands, all surrounded by over 5,000 miles of coastline make it one of the most attractive countries in the world to live in, with something for all tastes. Italy has it all. An exemplary heritage with some of the most famous ancient architecture ever, stunning landscapes and seascapes, irresistible food and a reputation for stylish living that is second to none throughout each of its 18 regions. The climate in Italy varies dramatically, but in the main is warm and gentle. The winters are very cold in the Alps, foggy and cold near the Dolomites and the Apennines and mild and almost warm near the coast. The Alps are the highest mountain range in Europe, stretching over 600 miles with peaks rising up to 14,000 ft with the 'piece de resistance' being the famous Mont Blanc. The Foothills of the Alps are dotted with the beautiful lakes of Garda, Maggiore and Como. The Appennines form the backbone of the Alps and together help form the beautiful characteristics of Italy with dramatic green hills and valleys. The Dolomites lie towards the north of Italy, but they are renowned for constant good weather and long warm sunny days. Along the full length of Italy are the two Italian Rivieras. Genoa in the middle and the Ponente which has the famous resorts of Portofino, Santa Margherita and Sestri Levante. The Capital of Italy is Rome with a population of around 5 million. The total population is approximately 56 million. The Currency is the Euro with the local time GMT + 1 hour. The primary religion is Catholic but this varies according to region. The main language is Italian but French, German and English are also widely spoken. Italy really is a beautiful country, it has an excellent climate and represents an eclectic mix of Mediterranean and European cultures. It has some of the finest foods, from legendary pasta to fabulous coffee, fresh meat and fish and homegrown produce with what is considered the best ice cream (Gelato) in the world.
